Service Learning in Rural/Remote Areas

During the summer vacasion of the first grade, students are required to complete 100 hours of service learning in remote area communities . The medical school provides a series of service courses that integrate opportunities under the Ministry of Education's University Social Responsibility (USR) program. These courses are designed for remote area communities service. Students are required to submit a service learning plan before the end of the first year, and guidance is provided by department faculty. The Bachelor of Medicine program's USR plan for the  academic year 2023 has been approved by the Ministry of Education, and the students are expected to undertake rural community service in Pingtung.

The service learning program in our medical school is planned with the following multiple objectives:

  1. Hold medical outreach free clinics and enhance the utilization of physical examination: Conduct service activities related to medication safety knowledge, health education, and self-health protection. After establishing mutual awareness and trust, organize medical outreach free clinics and physical examinations. Disseminate health literacy, knowledge of special protection, and activities that empower the elderly to delay aging among local residents.
  2. Conducting field investigations: Anticipate analyzing the correlation between the lifestyle in the area and its external environment, as well as the impact on human health, and identify opportunities for improving preventive measures against risk factors for diseases.
  3. Teachers and students engage in learning and exchanging experiences about indigenous cultures, gaining a profound understanding of the current situation in rural/indigenous areas. They adopt tailored healthcare education measures based on local conditions, aiming to enhance the willingness of medical students to stay and serve in remote and island regions in the future.
